Martian Legacy - The Red Planet Has Never Felt So Close
Martian Legacy: The First Manned Space Flight to Mars, Their Discoveries and the Danger They Brought Home, is a new science fiction thriller written by author, Fred Lane. Critics have called Lane's book "an ingenious romp into the near future" - and he truly weaves a tale that brings the reality of Mars exploration into a believable reality. The third decade of the twenty-first century dawns with a landing on Mars where Air Force Pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Harold T...

Jack Vance's 'The Lyonesse Trilogy' (1983 - 1989)
Jack Vance is one of the elder statesmen of Science-Fiction writing, accurately described by New York Times Magazine as 'one of American literature's most distinctive and undervalued voices.' For over fifty years, in a rich and varied career, he has contributed enormously to the field of Sci-Fi with a rich harvest of articles, reviews, short stories and novels that even failing eyesight in the early 1980s couldn't stop. A literate, inventive and playful spinner of tales his greatest works are probably the seminal 'Dying Earth' series (which in part spawned an entire sub-genre of 'end-of-time'...

Be Pure! Be Vigilant! Behave! - 2000AD's Nemesis the Warlock (1980 - 1999)
In the 1970s and '80s British Sci-Fi comic '2000AD' introduced some of the most iconic stories and characters to readers of comic books, and none more so than the demonic-like alien, 'Nemesis the Warlock'. From the creative mind of writer Pat Mills, this part-space opera epic, part-political commentary, began with a one-off story told in a weekly comic strip entitled 'Terror Tube' (1980), inspired by the album 'Going Underground' by the British rock band, the Jam.

Ghost of Achilles - Best Fantasy of 2010?
This year has been a particularly good one for the fantasy genre and as we get ever closer to 2011 I want to highlight my pick of 2010. The recently released Ghost of Achilles - True Ogre by Chris Sorrell gets my vote for this year's best fantasy novel. As a very keen, long time fantasy fan I've got to say that after reading this I can honestly say that I've found a new 'must' read.

Review - Tesseracts Thirteen
Here is another group of imaginative stories from the Great White North. Because of the number of this volume, 13, this book focuses on horror and dark fantasy stories.

Ghost of Achilles - Better Than Harry Potter?
As an enthusiastic Harry Potter fan, and overall fantasy genre fanatic I am always on the lookout for the next big thing or at least one that gets me excited about the prospect of sequels or the possibility of a series from the same author. I have just finished reading Ghost of Achilles - True Ogre by Chris Sorrell and felt it warranted further commentary, particularly as the Harry Potter series has now been drawn to a close. For those who have not yet read Ghost of Achilles the main storyboard plot centres on a young man named...

Nights of Villjamur by Mark Charan Newton
I'm going to get positively gushy about Nights of Villjamur. So consider yourself warned; employ slickers if you have to, drool may fly. Bold and outrageous claims will be made; none of them substantiated. None of them supported. Because the Nights of Villjamur is self-evident in its awesomeness.

Let a Little Culture Into Your Life
Iain Banks, or Iain M. Banks to the Sci-Fi fraternity, was a breadth of fresh air and his first book, a disturbing, tongue-'n-cheek, twist-at-the-end chiller with at least one indelible image that this writer still finds upsetting to think about (if you've read the novel you'll probably guess the one), was a deserved best seller. Since then he has gone on to write some 12 novels, of varying success but extravagant ability, and remains one of the most highly regarded 'New Wave' of Scottish writers working today. However, so-called mainstream fiction aside, it his Science-Fiction that remains my greatest passion.

Crossed Graphic Novel Review
Crossed is released through Avatar press, was written by the excellent Garth Ennis with artwork by Jacen Burrows. It is essentially an 'end of life as we know it' survival story. The 'crossed' of the title have been infected by a super plague which as well as marking them with a facial scar shaped liked a cross also turns them into homicidal lunatics with a penchant for rape and torture.
